From spreadsheets to services: setting out what fair funding means locally

Writing in The MJ, our Parliamentary Group Chair Sally Jameson MP reflects on SIGOMA’s role in shaping the Fair Funding Settlement and the importance of showing how changes in local government finance translate into day‑to‑day services:

“The Fair Funding Settlement announced in December represented a genuinely transformative step forward for local government finance. 

Following sustained engagement from SIGOMA councils and parliamentarians, the Government committed to two connected reforms: a move toward deprivation‑based funding with 100% council tax equalisation, and a strengthened Recovery Grant targeted at authorities facing the greatest pressures. 

Together, these changes ensure councils' resources better reflect underlying need while properly recognising differences in local revenue‑raising capacity.”
