Growing Divide Holding Communities Back

Recent research published by a team from the London School of Economics (LSE) has reinforced the prominence of a growing regional divide between rich and poor.
The report, ‘Pulling in the Same Direction?’, focuses on economic and social outcomes in London and the North of England since the recession and explores the regional distribution of public spending.
Researchers Polina Obolenskaya, Ruth Lupton and Bert Provan, conclude: “The findings suggest not only a need for regional rebalancing of both the economic and social kind, but that economic growth per se cannot be relied upon to improve social outcomes in any region – and in particular it cannot be relied upon to reduce poverty and inequality”.
